Before we write about Travel South America, I must remind you that we are talking about a huge continent that covers half of the World’s Western Hemisphere.
In South America there are many countries. The majority are Spanish Speaking countries, Brazil is the only Portuguese speaking one and a few small countries on the north of the continent speak Dutch in Surinam, former Netherlands Guyana, English in Guyana formerly British and French in Cayenne, still a French possession.
Let me address the most important destinations in the picturesque continent which are detailed in the next pages.
The Obelisk is a symbol of Buenos Aires Argentina
The capital city of Argentina is Buenos Aires, probably your first stop on a trip to this large South American country. The city has been called the Paris of the Americas, because it is known that Buenos Aires was built based on the plan of the city of Paris. Anything good said about this city is true.
Its boulevards and avenues crossing the city east to west and north to south were built with the future in mind. They are wide and long, making it a great city to walk. Places to visit include Avenida Nueve de Julio, the widest avenue in the world with the famous Independence Obelisk on the crossing with Calle Corrientes another important artery.
Plaza de Mayo with the Casa Rosada in Buenos Aires Argentina
Plaza de Mayo
Visit the Plaza de Mayo in front of the Casa Rosada or Pink House, residence of the President. Visit Teatro Colon and watch a play or concert if anything is showing while you are there. Stroll through the shopping streets of Florida and Santa Fe. Visit La Boca neighborhood with its colorful houses and buildings remembering the times when the tango started to reign in Argentina.
But Buenos Aires is just the beginning. This country offers, the vast Patagonia stretching all the way to the Magellan Straits in front of Antarctica reaching the city of Ushuaia. On the west of Patagonia before reaching the Andes mountains and the Province of Mendoza, neighboring Chile, visit San Carlos de Bariloche with its amazing views and the many lakes of the region.
Before leaving Argentina make sure you visit Mar del Plata, east of the capital and maybe fly to Iguazu Falls and view the falls from the Brazilian side.

The statue of Christ at the Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The largest and most populated country of South America, Portuguese speaking Brazil is a giant of tourism, and maybe a giant of many other things. It is today one of the important countries of the world.
Its capital is Brasilia that was built in the 1960s, to replace Rio de Janeiro, the former capital. Brasilia is a modern city with many wide avenues, monuments and all the offices of the federal Government of Brazil.
Rio de Janeiro is for an article all by itself. It is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, but at the same time there is lots of poverty in its streets, making it somewhat dangerous. Hopefully the authorities are taking care of it. Rio features two very important sites.
The Corcovado Mountain with the statue of Christ the Redeemer on top, from where the view is just mind boggling; and the Pão de Açúcar that dominates the entrance to the bay.

São Paulo is the largest city in Brazil, in South America and one of the biggest of the world. It’s like a New York in Portuguese with many attractions like any non-stop city that never sleeps.
The waterfalls of Iguazu are also a must destination, but you may leave it for your trip to Argentina a little further down.
Pehoe Lake in Torres del Paine Chile
The Republic of Chile is located on the southwestern corner of South America and borders Argentina and Bolivia on the east and Peru on the north.
The capital city of Santiago de Chile is a busy city with lots of progress. If you were in Santiago many years ago, you wouldn’t recognize the city today. Since the country’s economy is the best of South America, it shows in its capital.
When in Chile try the Chilean wines, some of the best in the world and needless to say that a country with such a long shoreline is a heaven for seafood and fish lovers.
