Ulaanbaatar the Capital of Mongolia
With about 1.3 million residents, it’s a fascinating city that combines old and new beautifully. This is vibrant city with modern tall buildings, shopping centers, nightlife and many restaurants and cafes.
In the capital you may see the ancient culture with the modern trends of life. The monasteries rub themselves with modern glass skyscrapers. And don’t miss the covered Narantul where to pick up traditional day to day products.
Gobi Desert in Mongolia
This is the fifth largest desert in the world and the largest in Mongolia. The landscapes are awe-inspiring with its spectacular singing dunes, the Khongoryn Els.
Most of the area is covered with gravel plains and rocky outcrops, home to the last two-humped camels in the world and Gobi bears, the only bears you can find in a desert landscape.
Visit the Eagle Valley, a protected site which narrows into a gorge. Bayanzag is another important place especially for those who like history.
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park
It is located in western Mongolia at the borders with Russia and China. It is home of some of the tallest mountain peaks in the country as well as waterfalls lakes and archaeological sites that include the UNESCO World Heritage Site Petroglyph Complexes of the Mongolian Altai.
Lake Khövsgöl
It is also known as the Dark Blue Pearl of Mongolia. It is a must-see sight when visiting this country. One hundred rivers stream into this lake that was first formed about 3 million years ago. Frozen for half of the year, it is surrounded by forests of pine trees with an abundance of wildlife. | ||
Gorkhi-Terelj National Park Located northeast of Ulaanbaatar, this is a national treasure and outdoors traveler’s paradise.

Karakorum-Erdenezuu
This is the oldest surviving Buddhist monastery in this country, located next to Karakorum, the ancient city. Stones from the ruined old city were used to build the monastery. |
Orkhon Valley
In this UNESCO World Heritage site, you will find writings from the 8th century. It is the site where the ancient capital city of Uighur thrived, and the location of the Tuvkhun monastery.
For nature lovers the Eighth Lakes, called in Mongolian Naiman Nuur, and Orkhon waterfall are an unforgettable spectacle.
The landscape is home to architectural ruins that date all the way back to the 6th century, including Kharkhorin, Genghis Khan’s capital in the 13th and 14th centuries.
Khorgo Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur National Park
The Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake can be found at an altitude of 2,060 meters. The unique geology of the Khorgo Volcano to the east makes this a location an unforgettable visit. The lake has a volcanic island at its center where exotic birds flock.
Khustai National Park
This is the right place to watch the steppes ecosystem. The fauna here includes the red deer, white tailed gazelles and Roe deer among others. There are a few historical monuments here such as Hunnu’s rectangular tombs and the Ongot’s man monuments, temple ruins.
Tsagaan Suwarga
The words mean White Stupa and the towering structure revealing limestone bedrock dating back to the ancient times makes for an awesome sight here. Don’t miss the amazing views of the desert floor which transforms from white to yellow to pink before turning red.
Amarbayasgalant Monastery
The Amarbayasgalant Monastery, with its 28 temples and incredible surroundings, is nestled in the Ivon Gol River Valley, a verdant, hilly landscape, is nothing just amazing.
Erdene Zuu Monastery
Located a little over a mile from Kharkhorin, the Erdene Zuu Monastery once had somewhere between 60 to 100 temples at its peak.
Established by Altai Khaan in 1586, the monastery is now open to visitors who can roam the grounds and take in the scenic beauty of the 16th century temples.
Dornod Mongolia Steppe
Located in eastern Mongolia, the Dornod Mongolia Steppe is a large, protected grassland ecosystem; one of the largest on earth. The landscape is great enough, where you may see about 40,000 Mongolian white-tailed gazelles as they migrate through the area each year.
Mongolia Flag Description
The State flag of Mongolia is a vertical tricolor with two reds at in sides and a blue in the middle, with the Soyombo symbol defacing the left red stripe. The blue stripe is described as the eternal blue sky and the red stripes symbolize thriving forever. The Soyombo symbol is a geometric abstraction that represents fire, sun, moon, earth, water, and a round shape as dualist aspect.
